What is an Udupi saree?

The Udupi saree is a traditional handloom cotton saree from the Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts of Karnataka, and it received its GI (Geographical Indication) tag in 2016. It is woven from fine combed cotton yarn on Malabar frame looms. The body is usually a checked design with a solid border, or a plain body with buti motifs. A contrast-coloured pallu and border give the saree its distinctive look. The starch applied to the warp on the loom gives the fabric its crisp finish and soft sheen, which is why a well-made Udupi cotton saree drapes neatly and feels cool in warm, humid weather.

Udupi handloom sarees woven by hand

Each of our Udupi handloom sarees is woven by hand, so no two pieces are exactly alike. Small variations in the weave are part of a genuine Udupi handloom saree. Our collection includes bold gingham checks, fine micro checks, buti weaves and striped pallus in colours such as olive, burnt ember, bottle green, royal violet, terracotta orange, coal and pearl, and sunshine mustard.

Udupi style saree: ways to wear it

An Udupi style saree works well from the office to festive family gatherings. Its structured drape suits the traditional pleated style, and it is also easy to carry through a long day. Pair a checked body with a plain or contrast blouse, or let the striped pallu take centre stage with simple jewellery. Cotton like this softens with every wash and only gets better with age.

Udupi saree revival and the weavers behind it

By the 1980s the Udupi saree had lost ground to power looms and changing livelihoods, and only a small number of weavers kept the craft alive. The Udupi saree revival efforts since 2018, led by organisations such as Kadike Trust with weaver cooperatives, have brought fresh attention to the weave, to fair wages and to natural dyes. When you buy a handwoven Udupi saree, you help keep this GI-tagged tradition and the weavers' livelihoods going. Our sarees are named after places and traditions of coastal Karnataka, in Kannada as well as English, as a small tribute to where the craft comes from.

How to care for your Udupi cotton saree

  • Wash separately in cold water the first time, as handloom colours can bleed slightly.
  • Use a mild detergent and avoid soaking for long periods.
  • Dry in shade and iron on the cotton setting while slightly damp.
  • Store folded in a cotton or muslin cover, and refold along different lines now and then.
