Product Details

Handwoven on traditional Malabar Frame looms, introduced to coastal Karnataka by the Basel Mission of Germany, the Udupi cotton saree carries nearly 150 years of weaving heritage in every thread. Delicate in appearance yet built to last generations, this is a GI-tagged revival weave reclaimed by master weavers after nearly being lost to powerlooms. This is a saree that only grows more beautiful with time.

This olive yellow and maroon handwoven Udupi cotton saree features an all-over bold check body woven in warm olive yellow and deep maroon, creating a rich, earthy tartan that drapes with effortless weight. The border runs in a crisp teal stripe with fine woven lines, cool and quietly contrasting against the warmth of the body. The pallu continues in the same teal stripe weave, clean and unfussy, letting the check body remain the star of the drape.

Woven using premium 60s count cotton yarn for both warp and weft, this saree is feather-light, breathable, and crisp against the skin—everything a handloom cotton saree should be. Styled here with a lime yellow blazer and a belt, this saree moves seamlessly from the boardroom to the weekend.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is special about the 60s count cotton used in this saree?

The "60s count" refers to the thickness of the cotton yarn. A 60s count means the yarn is fine and tightly spun, resulting in a fabric that is incredibly lightweight, soft, and highly breathable. It feels crisp against the skin but softens beautifully with every wash, making it the perfect fabric for India's tropical climate.

What makes Udupi cotton sarees unique?

Udupi cotton sarees are a GI-tagged heritage craft woven on traditional Malabar Frame looms in coastal Karnataka. They are known for their exceptional durability, lightweight feel, and clean, minimalist designs featuring checks or stripes. They represent a remarkable revival story, saved by master weavers from the brink of being replaced by powerlooms.

How can I style this saree for workwear?

Udupi cottons are incredibly versatile. As styled in our gallery, you can drape this saree neatly, secure the pallu with a modern belt, and layer it with a structured blazer (like mustard or lime yellow) for a sharp, contemporary boardroom look. Its feather-light drape ensures you stay comfortable through long work hours.

What blouse colour suits this olive yellow and maroon checked saree?

Since it does not include a blouse piece, you have the freedom to play with styling. A solid teal blouse will beautifully accentuate the crisp border, while a deep maroon or mustard blouse will highlight the checks. For a strict formal setting, a crisp black or white cotton top or blazer works flawlessly.

How do I care for my Udupi cotton saree?

Udupi cotton is highly durable. You can gently hand wash it in cold water with mild detergent. To maintain the crispness of the 60s count cotton, you may lightly starch it after washing. Always dry in the shade to prevent the colors from fading. Do not wring or twist heavily.
