Product Details

Handwoven on traditional Malabar Frame looms, introduced to coastal Karnataka by the Basel Mission of Germany, the Udupi cotton saree carries nearly 150 years of weaving heritage in every thread. Delicate in appearance yet built to last generations, this is a GI-tagged revival weave reclaimed by master weavers after nearly being lost to powerlooms. This is a saree that only grows more beautiful with time.

This deep plum handwoven Udupi cotton saree features a plain weave body in a rich wine-plum tone with a subtle iridescent quality that shifts between mauve and deep purple in different light. The border runs in a slim mustard-gold stripe with a fine black pinstripe edge, grounding the body with quiet warmth. The pallu makes a bold, considered statement — a deep charcoal-black field of vertical woven stripes in mustard-gold and white, dense and architectural, finished with a mustard border band and hand-cut black fringe tassels.

Woven using premium 60s count cotton yarn for both warp and weft, this saree is feather-light, breathable, and crisp against the skin—everything a handloom cotton saree should be. Styled here with an ivory tie-front blouse, this is a saree equally at home at a work meeting and an evening out.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the color of the plum saree look in person?

The saree has a beautiful, subtle iridescent quality. While it appears as a rich, deep plum in neutral lighting, it shifts gracefully between mauve and deep purple tones depending on how the light catches the weave.

What is the "60s count" cotton?

The "60s count" refers to the thickness of the cotton yarn. A 60s count means the yarn is fine and tightly spun, resulting in a fabric that is incredibly lightweight, soft, and highly breathable. It feels crisp against the skin but softens beautifully with every wash, making it the perfect fabric for India's tropical climate.

What blouse styles pair best with this saree?

Since it does not include a blouse piece, you have the freedom to play with styling. A solid ivory, cream, or black blouse creates a sharp, modern look perfect for the office. For a more festive vibe, a mustard or gold-toned blouse will beautifully complement the border and pallu stripes.

How do I care for my Udupi cotton saree?

Udupi cotton is highly durable. You can gently hand wash it in cold water with mild detergent. To maintain the crispness of the 60s count cotton, you may lightly starch it after washing. Always dry in the shade to prevent the colors from fading. Do not wring or twist heavily.
