Why We Started SEERE: A Saree is More Than Just Cloth

Diversity is another identity of India, and this is no exception in our clothing as well. SEERE is a saree brand that understands this deeply and hopes to unite the diverse tapestry of Indian saree weaves under one home. With this in mind, we invite all saree lovers to join us in curating timeless sarees from every region of India.

In a time when trends are constantly shifting and fast fashion is the most convenient choice, we hope to be a part of your journey that makes you fall in love with the slow and timeless nature of the saree. A saree is far more than a garment; it is our tradition, our culture, and a timeless monument that has witnessed Indian history from the Indus Valley civilization till today. If we, as Indians, do not protect and preserve this irreplaceable legacy, then who will?

Such questions, woven with our love for tradition, respect for the weavers, understanding of India’s diversity, and reverence for heritage, gave birth to SEERE.

How was SEERE Born?

SEERE was born out of our love for Indian culture and our rich weaving heritage. The founder of SEERE, Sneha KVL, who is the heart of the brand, used to be in the IT industry with 12 years of experience in her field. But her passion for sarees and deep understanding that a saree is much more than just a fabric made her walk away from her career and shift her focus to Indian craftsmanship.

For two years, she spent her time in India’s weaving heartlands. Here, she interacted with weavers, listened to their stories, explored hidden weaves, and worked closely with co-operatives. This move from her was how SEERE came into being. With an ambitious dream of housing the diverse sarees of India under one roof, the journey of our brand began.

The Story of Why SEERE Chose Saree

When you see a beautiful saree and wish to wear one yourself, we hope you can find what you are looking for in our store every time. A part of why we started SEERE is to ensure that even the rarest saree, along with the most renowned one, can be housed under our brand.

Our belief that each saree tells a unique story of the weavers, the wearers, the community, the history of the place, and their beliefs is what made every saree precious to us. Every weave is a priceless heritage passed down from generation to generation, and we hope we can take part in making sure each weave is not left behind.

To do this, our first objective is to look at the weavers and their challenges. Craftmasters from every part of India have dedicated their lives to preserving age-old weaving traditions while creatively innovating new ideas. Yet, weaving as a profession is no longer a reliable source of income. They have an immense love for the craft, yet are unable to sustain it as the pressures of fast fashion overshadow their painstaking, time-honoured artistry.

Surely, there are people who value the amazing weaves and admire the crafters of these arts. The problem arises when the weavers and the admirers are unable to connect directly. SEERE wishes to be that bridge, as we work directly with weavers, source authentic sarees, and market them in a way that customers can find them easily. By collaborating with weavers in this way, and ensuring fair pay to them as well, we hope to make weaving a reliable profession again.

Weaving a saree has been a generational occupation for many families and communities. SEERE was started because we do not wish to see these practices come to a stop in our time. We hope to create an environment that inspires new-generation weavers to continue their ancestral craft, making weaving a viable and respected profession in today’s economy.

The Values of SEERE

With a mission to bring India’s rich handloom heritage under one home, our goal is to enrich the weavers’ profession while ensuring our customers can get authentic regional sarees. Our brand chose to appreciate and admire the slow, soulful sarees produced by the melody of the handlooms. We chose to recognise the effort of the crafters as we cherish the unique arts of their talent.

In today’s India, before a weaver finishes weaving a single saree on their loom, fashion trends have already changed twice. This reveals the deep gap between skilled artisans who pour their souls into every weave and machine-produced sarees that can be made in mere hours. While a weaver is perfecting his art, few are willing to wait, as many rush to chase the latest style at the cheapest price. To make matters harder, machine-printed sarees can mimic the beauty of handloom designs so well that the difference is often overlooked. Handloom sarees, on the other hand, are harder to find, take weeks or months to complete, and are naturally more expensive because of the time, effort, and heritage woven into them.

In such a rapidly changing environment, we invite you to slow down and take some time to appreciate the arts connecting us to our ancestors. At SEERE, we take it as our responsibility to make this interaction as seamless as possible for our customers. We will source the sarees, tell you the stories they hold, and show you the weavers’ skills with a single hope that you are willing to write another beautiful chapter for this timeless drape.

Sustainability lies at the heart of our work. From exploring eco-friendly packaging to ensuring fair pay for artisans, we are committed to practices that honour both people and the planet. Beyond commerce, our social media platforms act as spaces of learning, where we share the history, legacy, and hidden stories behind each weave. We also host Saree Talks—an interactive masterclass crafted to educate and engage audiences in the rich world of India’s handwoven traditions.

Our Promise to Our Consumer

At SEERE, our promise goes beyond delivering a beautiful saree; we promise authenticity, fair pay, reasonable pricing, and timeless, diverse designs.

Authenticity and Fair Pay

We are working directly with weavers by travelling to weaving communities, engaging directly with master weavers who typically oversee 15–20 artisans, and learning more about them. We also actively promote weavers showcasing their family’s rich legacy of craftsmanship passed down through generations. Transparency is another key element as we ensure to list the type of yarns used, the weaving techniques employed, and the dyes involved. These factors help us make sure our sarees are genuine, while the pricing is fair for both the weavers and customers.

Diverse Design

Experiencing how much work goes into making a saree first-hand by visiting them enlightens our mindsets and helps us understand how much value their craft holds. This only encourages us to dive in deeper and explore each weave from every corner of India. We are trying our best to ensure each saree woven in India is available in our store, every weaver finds a place with SEERE, and customers can discover all the timeless designs from us. In our initial phase, we focus on weaves recognised by the India Handloom Brand, guaranteeing quality and provenance. Subsequently, we aim to incorporate weaves highlighted in various NGOs, self-help groups & and not-for-profit foundations.

Reviving Forgotten Weaves

We are trying our best to collaborate with social organisations to revive lost weaves. We also work with designers to introduce fresh perspectives, bringing forgotten textile traditions back into the spotlight. By working directly with artisan communities and eliminating middlemen, we ensure fair pricing, authenticity, and the creation of Seere-exclusive designs—unique sarees that also provide consistent work for low-demand clusters.

Conclusion

Whatever our vision and mission may be, without our customers, SEERE will be a dream beyond our reach. If Indians chose to forget about the saree, the timeless garment of India, our initiative has no value. But with the belief that we share the same love for our culture and our heritage, we have taken a bold step toward reviving lost weaves and uniting all of it under one brand. SEERE always welcomes you to understand the story of the saree better and invites you to be part of the journey it carries—from the hands of the weaver to your drape. Let us realise our dream together, ‘woven in India, draped by women across the world’.
